How to Clean a Glass Oven Door

oven glass door

Have you tried using the self-cleaning feature of your oven only to find out the glass oven door still looks grimy and streaked? In fact, this is an issue that many electric oven owners experience, so finding out to get rid of those greasy tracks on the oven door is a must.

Here are some tips on how to effectively clean a glass oven door:

Cleaning a glass oven door on the outside

This is considered the easiest part of the cleaning process; you just need to use your favourite natural glass cleaner like distilled white vinegar, microfiber cloths, and lemon juice. First, spritz the cleaner on the outside of your oven door. Using a microfiber cloth, wipe the grime away until the glass door is visibly clean and dirt free.

You should also use a dry microfibre cloth to buff away any streaks on the glass.

Cleaning oven window on the inside

Cleaning the inside of your oven door can be more challenging because you will be tackling dirt and grime that accumulated through weeks, months, or may even years of use. For this particular task, you will need to use a cup of baking soda, water, a medium-sized bowl, microfiber cloths, and a razor blade.

You first need to open the door and wipe off any loose bits of grime using a damp microfibre cloth. Next, pour the baking soda into an empty bowl and slowly add water to it to make a paste. The paste should be consistent, like a shaving cream.

Once the paste is created, put it on the outside of the oven window and let it sit there for around 15 to 20 minutes. Moisten a clean microfiber cloth and wipe the paste away. If you notice that there are stuck-on gunk remains, you can use the razor blade to scrape that dirt away gently. Make sure to use the flat edge and not the corner because this may scratch the glass.

How to clean between the glass of your oven door

Once you’ve cleaned the outside, and inside part of your glass oven door, you will also need to remove the annoying grim stuck in the middle. For this task, you will need some tools like a screwdriver, clean towel or sheet, cup of baking soda, water, medium-sized bowl, microfiber cloths, razor blade, oven’s manual, and a helper (optional).

The first thing you need to do is open the oven door and look at the screws that hold the door together. Most ovens use star screws, so you may want to go to the hardware store for a star screwdriver if you don’t have one.

Before doing anything else, consult your oven manual to see how to remove the oven door properly. You may also want to lay a towel on the kitchen floor where you plan to put the door. After that, remove the oven door and lay it down on the towel with the inside window facing up. Next, remove the screws on the door, which is commonly located above the base of the oven door.

Remove the grime and dirt in the mid-section of your oven door using a damp microfiber cloth. Lastly, with the assistance of your helper, reassemble the oven door to its original location.

Ovens can be complicated, but as one of the most useful appliances in our home, it is important to understand the features and functions. With this knowledge, you can get an understanding of what might be causing the issue before you call a professional oven technician.

Here is a rundown of the important parts of your oven:

Oven elements

One of the most essential parts of your cooker are the oven elements. It is the part that heats up and cooks your meals. There are two types of elements, and these will include: oven base and fan oven elements. The circular shape that is fitted in front of your oven is the fan oven element, and this allows the heat to spread evenly around the body and cavity of the oven.

An oven base element is usually placed at the bottom part of your oven and is responsible for distributing heat from the bottom to the top. However, the hot air produced by an oven base element is not as evenly distributed as that of the fan oven element.

So, if you notice that any of your oven elements is struggling to heat up, your oven element might be faulty.  It is recommended that you replace your oven elements, so they can perform as expected.

Electric thermostats and regulators

For electric ovens, the thermostat is an essential part because it regulates the oven’s temperature. In fact, it is responsible for maintaining the heat inside your oven. Therefore, if this part is faulty, you may find that your oven is overheating or even underheating. This is an issue that can cause your food to be incorrectly cooked, so you will need to replace it as soon as you can.

Oven fan and motors

Oven fans are responsible for distributing hot air evenly in your oven cavity. It is usually situated behind the oven fan element or at the back of your oven cavity. Another type of fan is the cooling fan and its main role is to prevent your oven from overheating or burning your meals. Both of these fans are very important because they regulate the heat in the oven.

If any of these fans are faulty, you may experience overheating that can even lead to fire accidents. That is why you need to replace them immediately with a brand-new part as soon as possible.

However, you need to get in touch with a professional oven repair technician because they have the tools and experience to replace these parts correctly.
